A documentary acadia national park elopement

Emilee and John's Acadia National Park elopement was everything I love about intimate weddings. They built a timeline around creating core memories by spending time together and really taking in one of the most beautiful national parks in the country instead of spending their day rushing from one event to the next.

As an Acadia National Park wedding photographer, you honestly can’t take a photo in a bad spot. To me that’s the magic of celebrating your love in vast, scenic and cinematic environments like Acadia National Park. My goal as a documentary wedding photographer is to deliver a gallery that capture the emotions and the setting. Environment matters a lot, and choosing Acadia National Park as their backdrop made their gallery shine.

If you're dreaming of an Acadia National Park elopement, this day is a great example of how you can combine incredible scenery with a fun and relaxed experience while still keeping the celebration meaningful.

Why They Chose an Acadia National Park Elopement

Acadia National Park offers tons of unique natural features. Rugged granite cliffs, dense evergreen forests, mountain overlooks, and miles of Atlantic coastline all exist within a relatively small area is not something you’re going to find anywhere else! There is no wedding venue that can capture the “wow factor” like Acadia National Park.

The variety of locations and geographical features all within a relatively short distance of each other in Acadia National Park means that you have tons of opportunities for easy exploration and discovery. Leaning into your adventurous side will help create natural moments between you, your partner and your loved-ones and your gallery will absolutely reflect that.

Emilee and John wanted their wedding day to feel like an adventure instead of following a traditional wedding schedule. They planned a day that allowed plenty of time to explore Acadia, visit some of the park's most iconic overlooks, enjoy a meal together in Bar Harbor, and finish the evening watching sunset from Cadillac Mountain.

The highlight of their wedding day was the very beginning, exchanging vows at Otter Cliff.

An extremely short walk from the parking lot, Otter Cliff rises dramatically above the Atlantic Ocean, creating one of the most breathtaking ceremony locations in Maine. The sound of the waves crashing below and the sweeping coastal views make it easy to understand why so many couples choose this location for their Acadia National Park elopement.

Rather than focusing on decorations or elaborate details, the landscape of Acadia National Park became the backdrop for everything. Their ceremony felt quiet, intentional, and completely centered on the two of them. The cliff is absolutely large enough to easily fit everyone on your day.

As an Acadia National Park elopement photographer, these are the moments I love photographing most. The genuine reactions, emotional vows, and quiet moments that happen naturally when couples are fully present with each other.

Portraits Throughout

Acadia National Park

After their ceremony, we spent the afternoon exploring several areas throughout the park.

One of my favorite parts of photographing an Acadia National Park wedding is that every stop feels completely different. Within a short drive you can photograph dramatic cliffs, peaceful forests, winding roads, rocky beaches, and mountain overlooks.

Throughout the afternoon we stopped at scenic pull-offs along the Acadia Park Loop Road, explored Otter Point, and just sort of followed wherever the vibes were going to take us.

Emilee and John prioritized taking time to slow down and take it all in instead of rushing from location to location trying to check boxes. While we still did navigate from spot to spot, those extra moments often create the most meaningful photographs because couples have space to simply enjoy being together. This is, in my opinion, one of the best aspects of choosing an elopement. There is no strict schedule to adhere to. You don’t have several vendors waiting on you or expecting you to be anywhere at any time. You have the freedom to be truly present.

Sunset Portraits on

Cadillac Mountain

We finished the evening on Cadillac Mountain, one of if not the most iconic destination in Acadia National Park.

Watching the light change over Frenchman Bay while photographing newlyweds on top of one of Maine's most famous mountains made for an unforgettable ending to an incredible day. These are some of my favorite photos of the day. They’re raw, full of emotion and are the perfect ending to this beautiful celebration.

Cadillac Mountain offers panoramic views unlike anywhere else in the park, making it one of the most popular locations for Acadia National Park engagement photos, elopements, and intimate weddings.

Planning Your Own

Acadia National Park Elopement

If you're considering planning an Acadia National Park elopement, there are a few things worth knowing before choosing your date.

The park can become busy during peak tourist season, especially around sunrise and sunset at popular locations like Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, and Otter Cliff. Planning your timeline carefully helps create a more relaxed experience and often results in better photographs.

I would be especially careful planning a full ceremony at Cadillac Mountain. Because it is the most popular tourist spot in Acadia National Park, often times you need to reserve a time slot to even drive up to the top. The intimate feeling can be lost when there are hundreds of people around you at all times. There are also tons of logistical issues that may arise trying to get a caravan of people up the mountain all at the same time. Fortunately the mountain wasn’t busy enough at this time and while there were still a lot of people there with us during portraits, we did not need to reserve a time slot.

Weather in coastal Maine can also change quickly. Personally I absolutely love the change in weather. Fog, wind, and shifting light are all part of the experience. While many couples may hope for sunshine, some of my favorite photographs have happened during overcast or misty conditions because they create a uniquely coastal atmosphere.

Every location inside the park has different lighting throughout the day, so choosing the right ceremony location often depends on your timeline, season, and overall vision.

Working with an experienced Acadia National Park wedding photographer means having someone who understands how to build a timeline around lighting, crowds, weather, and travel throughout the park.
